When I was just starting out in hypnosis I came across a man called William May.
I spoke to him for some time, and soon came to realize that he was unusually good at covert hypnosis.
He taught me how to move beyond the 'standard' method of doing things, and look at this stuff in a new way.
And he certainly had some adventures.
I remember one time he told me about when his friend was always having trouble remembering things.
You know what it's like when you just forgot something you know your ought to know.
But with this friend it just kept happening.
Where she put her car keys, what she had to do today, what she had to do tomorrow...
It was becoming quite a problem.
Now, Will, being quite a crafty hypnotist, could have just run a few patterns and told her she had better recall and access to her memory, he could have done a quick induction and thrown in some suggestions, and hoped they worked, but Will, being an innovator, decided to push the envelope.
If you were watching the conversation they had, you would have noticed him speak to her for just a few minutes, innocently.
As they talked, you would have noticed her seem to become distracted.
To start looking over her shoulder, as if she was trying to see something, but you knew there was nothing there.
Then you would have seen her look again, a look of wonder and fascination on her face at what she had allowed her mind to create.
You see, all Will had done was to give her access to the true resources of her own mind.
He had created for her a dog.
To her this dog was completely real, even though she understood it was a creation of her mind.
And whenever she forgot something that she knew, this dog would simply bark softly in her ear, and remind her.
Imagine having your own little dog with you, telling you everything you needed to know.
William bases many of his innovations on the work of Milton Erickson.
The way Milton used to just talk to people, and in the course of an innocent conversation, they would become cured.
Milton himself was quite a cheeky hypnotist also.
At the hospital where he worked he received a fair bit of ridicule for being a hypnotist.
Other doctors didn't understand hypnosis, and they would just laugh at old Milton.
Well, at first.
These same doctors who laughed at him would often find themselves standing, catatonic, in the middle of long hospital corridors for hours on end, with no idea how they got there, unable to move, their right arm outstretched, almost as if they were about to shake someone's hand...
For literally years I kept telling Will to create a course of his own.
Will was tempted, but he told me he couldn't because he was scared.
It's all very well learning a few pattern interrupts and language tricks, but to really learn this stuff properly does give you power, power that in the wrong hands can be misused.
Will is, in my opinion, one of the best kept secrets of the hypnosis world, and the reason why he has kept such a low profile (but has been behind the scenes in more places than you'd expert) is because Will is one of the most ethical guys I know.
He always uses this stuff to help others and to make the world a better place.
But how can we be sure everyone who learns this stuff, the people he teaches, have the same responsibility?
Well, when it comes down to it, it's up to you. The fact is if you use these methods to harm of rip off others, in the long run no one suffers more than you. But if you use these techniques as a force for good, then you and everyone around you benefits.
After a lot of nagging and persuasion on my part, Will finally agreed to release his most interesting methods and innovations to the public.
I cannot tell you how excited I am by this.
The innovations he is releasing really are breath taking.
And perhaps the best part is, a whole heap will be free!
When you go to Will's new website you'll get the option to sign up to his newsletter list and access his private download area.
There you'll find a treasure trove of hypnosis and persuasion resources which you'll be able to learn from and begin applying in your own life right away.
Will has also, very reluctantly, agreed to release an exclusive advanced coaching program to the public to a very select group of people.
I would say I have learned more from Will about how to really be a hypnotist than the summation of all the hypnosis books and DVDs I have ever watched or read.
Trust me when I say Will knows his stuff.
And he's not going it alone.
Amazingly he has managed to find someone who equals his ability and matches him innovation for innovation.
I hardly know Tim Shay, but from what I have seen so far he is definitely someone worth learning from.
So, check out www.masterhypnoticlanguage.com now to access your free downloads.
When you're there, read the letter written by Will (and try not to go too deeply into trance as you do so) and at least consider the offer his is giving you.
Now, I need to warn you, this may be the last post you'll see from me for a little while.
I am finally up to my final exams, and as you can imagine, they take up a lot of time.
The wonderful thing about this is that come December this year I go into hypnosis full time, and then, trust me when I say a revolution is coming to the online hypnosis world!
Not only will you be receiving a veritable bombardment of free hypnosis lessons and resources to help you become a master hypnotist, but I also have two huge projects in the works which I know you are going to immediately fall in love with.
I can't say too much about them here, but I can tell you that one is a 100% free eCourse teaching some of the most useful Street Hypnosis methods I've come across (and focusing on the practical, guaranteeing you get this stuff working for you). I know you'll love this course, and not just because of the non existent price tag!
The second program is, if possible, even more exciting.
It looks to solving the number 1 biggest problem faced by nearly everyone trying to learn hypnosis, which still plagues experts and professionals alike. If you ever thought something was missing from your set of hypnotic resources, then get ready for an amazing treat!
So, come December, you had better keep your eyes peeled!
In the mean time, go to www.masterhypnoticlanguage.com now and allow yourself to become a master of covert hypnotic influence.
Cheers
Nathan Thomas

Why Your Hypnotic Inductions And Suggestions Are Failing (and how to eliminate this for good!)
It seems every day five or six copies of the same email (albeit from different addresses) arrive in my inbox;
"Nathan,
I watched a video / read a few articles, and tried a few instant inductions on my [friend, girl friend, sister]
and it doesn't work.
Help."
Hmmm. (fellow trainers will see where I'm going with this, but for you beginners and fellow students, it will all become clear very soon)
Another equally common breed of inquiry is
"I have been doing this for months, but every induction I have done has failed. People just laugh and it just doesn't work.
Help."
Now, in this post let me answer all the 500 varieties of this question in one fell swoop.
If the hypnosis you do isn't working, be you beginner, experienced learner, or life long veteran, it will NEARLY always be fixed by one of the three essential elements below.
(here's a clue, none of them are relaxation :)
Why I said NEARLY is because hypnosis us an unconscious process.
I am not arrogant enough to assume I know to any degree of certainty how the human mind really works, which is why having a rigid set of conditions and expectations in your mind when doing hypnosis is foolish at best.
More on that soon, for now, let's begin!
Three (easy) Ways To Finally Eliminate Failure And Start Making Your Hypnosis Work
1: Understand the difference between the simple mechanics of a technique, and what is really going on.
For example, let's take the arm drop induction (you may know it by the brand, the 8 word induction).
Here's how it works; you hold your hand palm up. They push down upon it. You move your arm away, and say sleep.
Simple.
Well here's the news for you.
The above is less than 0.01% of what is really going on.
There is so much more that goes on behind the scenes.
I'm not talking about the hypnotic language you use, or the deliberate mirroring of their posture and breathing rate (these things are useful, but no where near the biggest part...)
What I am talking about is largely unconscious.
It is your confidence and your expectations.
Your own mindset is the most important part of the hypnotic process.
This controls your sub communications, which include everything from your tone of voice, gestures, breathing rate, body language, posture, gestures, pace of speech.
Everything.
They (the subjects) unconsciously pick up on all of this, so if you are not confident or do not really expect it to work, you are very unlikely to succeed.
So what do you do about it?
Mentally rehearse.
Go inside and imagine it being successful.
How will you feel when you pull off that induction, and notice your suggestions immediately accepted?
What will this feeling really mean to you?
How will your subject look? What will be the look on his / her face before, during and after you succeed with this?
As John Cerbone, inventor of 'Speed Trance;' says (paraphrase) "In my mind they are already in trance long before I do my induction"
Before you do any hypnosis take a deep breath, and step right into those feelings of success.
When you look at your subject, look at them with this feeling of total intent, knowing they will go into trance. It's not a matter of 'forcing' them there, it's a matter of knowing that you are the hypnotist, if you intend it, it will happen.
This is of course what is known as Hypnotic Intent.
In order for your confidence to be justified and your expectations to happen, you need to formulate your intention, and you really need to believe it.
Anthony Jacquin, author of 'Reality Is Plastic' sums this up perfectly when he says; "A hypnotic induction is merely a vehicle for delivering your intent to hypnotize."
When your verbal and nonverbal communications are aligned, when you are congruent, you will amazed by how successful you become.
Take a while to think on this, as it is probably the most important thing you will ever learn about hypnosis.
2: Set The Right Frame
When you ask someone to be hypnotized, what happens?
Do they see it as a challenge to resist your 'hypnotic power'
Do they think of it as a joke, or something they must prove wrong?
Or are they open to explore the power and potential of their own unconscious mind?
Just like when doing the formal hypnosis, when explaining hypnosis and setting the frame, your own confidence and expectations are also essential.
You need to realize that as a hypnotist, you are offering them a unique gift, a wonderful experience which they will forever remember and be grateful for.
You do not want to come off as desperate for them to let you hypnotize. You should have nothing to prove, as you know this stuff works.
Get them on your side right from the start by showing just how they will benefit from hypnosis.
Allow your enthusiasm, your confidence and your passion to speak louder than your words, and the excitement you feel will be immediately mirrored by your subject.
Some people will be more difficult than others at first (although once you gain more experience you'll learn how to use metaphor and language in a way which makes virtually everyone open to being hypnotized) so when you are just starting out please make sure you vary your subjects. Don't just try hypnotize one person a hundred times and then give up.
The more people you hypnotize the better.
(when starting out you'll probably find strangers a lot easier to hypnotize than friends or family)
And hey, be patient.
I am sure there was a time when, you too, thought that hypnosis was nothing more than a man with a goatee beard and a pocket watch murmuring in an exotic accent.
Pace their reality, the way they feel, and lead this towards the frame you want.
for example;
"Yeah, I know, I wouldn't want to give up control and have some nutter messing around inside my head either. The cool thing is, hypnosis isn't like that. You know what it's like when you just relax, go inside your own mind, and kinda zone out? Well when you take this state, and use it to access your unconscious mind, 90% of your true brain power, then that's hypnosis. So if you want to see just how powerful your own mind really is, I'll be happy to do you a favor and help you experience this."
I could go on for hours about how to turn resistance into compliance during pretalks, but that's a post for another day. Just remember, it's all in the frame you set. Think about how you want them to view the hypnotic process, and what would have to happen in order for them to think like this.
3: Utilize!
Remember what I said before about not having a rigid set of conditions around the hypnosis you do?
Just because they do not close their eyes and collapse in a heap on the floor does not mean you have to write everything off as a failure.
Use everything they give you, and utilize their every response.
If they laugh tell them to keep laughing as they go into trance, and the more they laugh the deeper they go.
If they jerk their heads up and look at you like you have gone mad (happened to me once or twice :) just tell them that they are doing fine, to close their eyes (or keep them open) and go way down deep into trance.
Take their every reaction, their every response, and direct it towards your Hypnotic Intent.
Be creative.
Explore, and take every signal they give you as on opportunity to show them just how deep into hypnosis they really are going.
During the audio lesson on advanced utilization skills for Become A Hypnotist - Advanced Hypnosis Certification Training, I talk you through a list of situations and responses and how you can turn them towards you advantage, during pretalk, induction and suggestion.
But you know what it all comes down to?
Flexibility and creativity.
Have fun with this, and enjoy the process of responding directly to anything and everything they give you.
That's It!
Confidence, setting the right frame, and utilization are essential elements of hypnotic success.
You now have all the tools to be a successful hypnotist, all you need now is to integrate what you have learned here.
What you learned above will only really become clear and solid in your mind now with practice.
Remember, this stuff is far more unconscious than conscious.
Put your own spin on these ideas, and interpret them in the way that suits you best.
Develop your ideas with experience and practice, and notice as your understandings change.
The more you do hypnosis, the easier and more interesting it gets.
So, go for it, and hypnotize someone, and enjoy exploring these newfound understandings.
Cheers
Nathan Thomas.
PS
Oh yeah, and even with this, sometimes it may fail.
So what?
Failure will get less frequent as time goes own, but use it as an opportunity to learn.
Ask the subject what happened, and be glad of this valuable chance to learn something useful.

Review: The Art Of Covert Hypnosis by Steven Peliari
Have you ever watched a psychic or 'mind reader' at work?
What they do seems just amazing, after just meeting you, often before you have even spoken and without them doing any research or knowing anything about you at all, they can get right inside your head.
Imagine having your innermost thoughts, feelings and desires fed to you by a complete stranger? This is powerful stuff that goes way beyond mere entertainment.
"Mind reading" is the ultimate in pacing statements, and will enable you to take anyone from wherever they are, and lead them successfully in any direction.
As hypnotists this tool in amazingly powerful.
Resistance, skepticism, and unresponsiveness during pretalk, induction, suggestion or any covert persuasion are instantly blown away when you plug in to the real feelings and desires of your hypnotic subjects.
Now I don't know what your personal beliefs are on psychics, spiritualists and medians, but there are scientific and psychological ways of seeming to do exactly what they do... and it's really quite easy!
The hypnotist and mentalist Steven Peliari has recently released a course into the market teaching covert hypnosis skills. Unlike the numerous other courses out there Steven's is the only one which will teach you exactly how the psychics, TV Evangelists, magicians and mentalists do their thing.
The Art Of Covert Hypnosis comes with about 8 hours of audio training, plus the complete 322 page manual, and the revision and exercise manual.
The usual stuff like hypnotic language, rapport and social engineering is clearly explained and well taught, and you'll learn a lot of very cool skills about rapport, anchoring and state control which give you a huge edge in any social situation.
Derren Brown is a master of using these skills, and when you study this course you'll get to learn the exact secrets he uses for covert and conversational hypnosis.
Now this course does fall victim to the disease of over hyped marketing, so common among hypnosis programs. The reason why most hypnotists, even the most honest and ethical, do this, is simply because it sells.
This hype at first put me off, I thought it would be just another carbon copy.
Fortunately I was wrong.
If you want to learn the real science that goes own behind the masks of the charlatans, and learn the psychological tactics which will allow you to tap into peoples inner drives and learn exactly what makes them tick, then this course is the one to get.
The sections on body language control and observation are very well done, and cold, warm and hot reading are invaluable to anyone who want to have an unfair advantage in a social environment.
Now, as well as these covert tactics The Art Of Covert Hypnosis also covers some interesting aspects of overt instant hypnosis. Steven shares some interesting perspectives on the idea of trance and suggestibility, most of which seems quite Kapassian in origin, which I do not necessarily agree with, but certainly constitute a useful way of viewing the hypnotic process.
The ideas on physical and emotional suggestibility taught also seemed to originate quite recently through John Kappas and the Hypnosis Motivation Institute, however their applications here in terms of Street and Covert hypnosis are nicely outlined.
In the course you'll learn the science behind instant induction techniques such as the hypnotic handshake induction. This is itself rare for a covert hypnosis course, and makes an interesting addition.
In terms of the actual delivery of content, we have very few issues.
There is extremely little waffle and space filler and Steven breaks everything down for you into simple step by step processes, making what you learn easy to use and apply the instant you start.
Real life examples are well used and help get your creative mind rolling about how you can apply these covert psychological tactics in your own life. Perhaps a little more enthusiasm would have been useful in the actual recording of the CD's, but everything is very clear, concise and easy to absorb and understand.
The complete manual makes an invaluable addition to the package, and the revision and exercise guide allows you to check your progress every step of the way and eases you out into the real world with simple tasks designed to hone your skills.
Finally, something new and original in the covert hypnosis field!
The unique fusion of mentalism into the hypnosis / NLP package makes this course an invaluable addition to the hypnosis market. If you want to broaden your skill range and learn how to apply the secrets of psychics and mentalists to the skills of healers and hypnotists, then I strongly recommend you check it out.

PS
Steven emphasizes heavily in the course that you are not to use this knowledge the become another fraud or charlatan. Use the skills and techniques you will learn here as a force for good in the world, and never pretend to be something you aren't.

Real World Street Hypnosis Seminar - The Videos
Hey
As you may have heard I recently taught a Street Hypnosis seminar in Auckland, New Zealand.
It was a really fun day with 20 students of varying abilities wanting to get more confident with instant and rapid induction and hypnotic suggestion. It was very hands on and everyone there got to do a huge amount of hypnosis.
Below are some of the videos from the day which I hope you'll enjoy.
The Group Induction At The Start
A simple hypnotic language induction designed to get the students to relax and focus on achieving their goals for the day. Notice the use of hypnotic language, pacing and leading and time distortion.
The Arm Drop (8 Word) Induction Demonstrated
The arm drop induction, commonly called the '8 word' (but with a couple more words in this case) demonstrated and explained. After this demo students got together in pairs and I explained some of the nuances of the technique, such as pressing up on the subjects hand to encourage them to press down, the misdirection used to confuse the person being hypnotized, and the essential importance of hypnotic intent.
Instant Non Verbal Hypnosis Induction.
To emphasize the importance of hypnotic intent, rapport and state control and to show how
the non verbal element of hypnosis is perhaps the most important aspect of the hypnotic process we covered non verbal hypnosis.
The Arm Lock Instant Hypnosis Induction
Funny how it's the younger people who keep volunteering, isn't it?
A couple of videos are shown with older subjects, demonstrating suggestion phenomena and such like, however due to the advanced nature of these videos most are kept private for subscribers to Free Street Hypnosis Training.
This video was filmed during the waking hypnosis segment of the training, and shows how to take a suggestibility effect, such as arm lock, and convert it to and induction.
Notice the use of dissociative language 'that hand', compliance building at the start (it really doesn't matter whether they are right or left handed, but this begins to overload the critical factor right from the start) and how the tonality I used reflects the suggestions given.
We all had a huge amount of fun on the day and got to explore some really cool stuff.
I've already begun receiving requests for overseas training, so if you are in the USA or UK, keep your eyes peeled!
Thanks for watching, and I'll see you soon.
Nathan
