It seems to be the obsession of many hypnotists to be able to instantly induce deep trance.
They get amazingly worked up about it, and end up blowing the whole concept of instant inductions completely out of proportion.
Now i admit i was the same once, it took me ages to build up the confidence to use instant inductions, but when i did i found them quite easy.
To prove this to myself i set myself a little challenge.
Several of my friends want to learn hypnosis, after seeing / experiencing me hypnotizing other people.
Two of them in particular were very keen to learn instant inductions.
The first friend knew nothing about hypnosis at all before i started, he had watched one of two YouTube videos, but had never read anything on hypnosis, and only experienced a trance state for the first time that morning. (with me as the hypnotist :)
Now a lot of people say it's impossible to learn hypnosis that quickly, but after i had explained the theory and safety aspects to him, I'd say it took less than an hour before i had him performing successful instant inductions, not just on me, but on other people as well.
Just to be sure this wasn't a one off i did the same with another friend, it probably only took half and hour this time!
I managed to capture some of the lessons on film, watch on the video below me explaining some of the principles behind instant hypnotic inductions, and performing two of them, which i will break down for you below.
Enjoy the video, and my apologies for the poor video quality, i am working on it!
The first induction was one that i spontaneously created in the moment. You may want to watch it again and as you do look out for the following things:
Compliance building, by switching hands at the start i got him used to following my instructions.
Cerebral competition, its a bit like the old child hood game of rubbing your stomach and scratching your head at the same time, except much more powerful and much more confusing. it ends up sending conflicting messages across the left and right hemispheres of the brain, as the two hemispheres compete for control the person enters into a deep state of overload and becomes hyper suggestible.
Shock and Suggestion, I interrupt the confusing pattern by pulling down his hand, creating shock, and then giving my suggestion.
Now, when i did this i was not consciously keeping track of any of this, i was just following my intuition and doing what seemed right at the time. I suggest you do the same.
Remember to keep in mind the safety and well being of the subject, and just give it a try!
Oh, and for a great course on Instant Inductions see How To Hypnotize By Stephen Hall (its by far my favorite course on Instant Inductions and Stage Hypnosis, you'll be delighted with it!)

Hi Nathan,
what about providing transcripts with your videos? Some of them are vocally really hard to understand; even worse for non-native speakers ;-)
Regards C.
I just found your blog and wanted to say it has some great information. I'm a certified Hypnotist as well and I agree that people need to stop worrying so much about the instant induction and just do them. Once you know the steps they are quite easy and you many never use a progressive relaxation again.
Thanks,
Josh
